Dear Me Eatery, Longmarket St

1 06 2011

Word on the street is that Dear Me, with it’s pretty and inviting green awning on Longmarket Street is the new place to be. Citing curiosity, rather than the need to conform, as the proverbial arm-twister I decided to give it a go last week. And I wasn’t disappointed. In fact, it’s now on the tip of my tongue for any city bowl brunch or lunch recommendations and will probably stay there for a long while to come. In other words, it left a yummy taste in my mouth… Read the rest of this entry »

The Happy-Making Stellenbosch Fresh Goods Market

30 11 2010

If you’ve read my post on the glorious Neighbourgoods Market in Cape Town, you’ll know I have a penchant for fresh produce, especially the kind that you can eat and browse. Nothing tastes better than a Saturday stroll through a vibey food market, and The Fresh Goods Market just outside Stellenbosch is no exception. Read the rest of this entry »

Saul’s in Wynberg – Where it all starts and ends with The Burger.

21 10 2010

Saul Beder has had many titles during the course of his twenty year long and very colourful restaurant career in Cape Town. Amongst them are ‘culinary rock star’ and a ‘no frills foodie maestro and magician’. And there certainly was a sparkle about the place when he warmly welcomed our jolly bunch to sample the burgers at his latest brainchild in Wynberg recently. Read the rest of this entry »

Everyone’s Favourite Neighbourgoods Market, Woodstock

12 10 2010

Picture pilfered from Neighbourgoods Market site.

Ni Hao people! I am posting this from amongst the hustle and bustle of a very intriguing Beijing where I am currently traveling. I’ve had it written up for a while but just haven’t had the chance. Until now – I’ve stolen a lazy couple of hours at my computer after our incredible morning at The Great Wall, and a trip to the famous birds nest Olympic stadium. Talk about an odd juxtaposition. From the unbelievably old to the very new. Yip, China has it all.

So, until I get myself back to sunny SA with more stories from Mao’s playground, here’s an idea to keep you all busy this coming weekend… Read the rest of this entry »

La Mouette, Greater Than Expectation

4 10 2010

It has to be said that there’s a bit of a buzz going around Cape Town at the moment. A buzz about the tale of two fearless foodies who packed in their London lives and headed for the culinary mecca that is the Mother City, and subsequently found themselves elbow-deep in the midst of a herculean undertaking. The result of which is the fresh-faced and fabulous new restaurant, La Mouette. Read the rest of this entry »

Pretty Super Superette

27 09 2010

Nothing tastes as good as something that exceeds your expectations on a random Saturday morning. We were headed for The Old Biscuit Mill last weekend, and since hearing some pretty cool stuff about hippy-funky-deli-vibe Superette, have had an itch I needed to scratch about getting over there. And boy are we glad we did. Read the rest of this entry »

Simple TRUTHs about Life and Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee

7 09 2010

It started with a R5 million book on speciality coffee and a trip to New Zealand. After attending a wedding there, David moved to Greyton and bought and refurbished The Post House. Armed with the beloved book, here began his journey into the world of artisanal coffee. He couldn’t get freshly roasted beans delivered often enough for his liking, so he started sourcing and roasting his own.  Ergo, the book fueled a flame that has consumed an entire decade and a small fortune invested in all things coffee. Thai Fusion & Smiles All Round thanks to Silwood & Le Creuset

20 08 2010

Perfection in the form of a pot. Le Creuset, please take a bow.

I know what you’re thinking, there’s nothing more distasteful than smugness, but these beautifully hand-crafted culinary masterpieces have every right to appear pleased with themselves. And it’s not just because they seem to have a life of their own, a certain air of owning all the savoir faire in the world of appliances, nor is it because they do admittedly come with fancy-fancy prices, but rather because each and every one is lovingly hand crafted. And you can taste it. Add to this a life-time guarantee and stovetop-to-oven-to-table versatility and you’ve found your very raison d’etre. Read the rest of this entry »
